Agenda & Description

This intermediate-level workshop provides a practical introduction to developing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) models for mass timber construction using OpenLCA, an open-source, high-performance tool for sustainability assessment and life-cycle modeling. While OpenLCA can be applied to any product, process, or system beyond wood products and building systems, this session focuses on mass timber applications.

• If you are looking to learn an advanced-level LCA tool, this workshop is for you.
• If you are interested in industry-specific tools like Tally or OneClick, this workshop is not for you.
• Please do not register if you are unfamiliar with LCA concepts or mass timber construction. For beginners, we recommend the Mass Timber Bootcamp (shown above) that’s organized by WoodWorks.

Topics Covered

• Introduction to LCA Modeling. Assumes attendees have a general understanding of LCA principles.
• Handling Biogenic Products and Carbon. Special considerations for wood and biogenic carbon in LCA.
• Hands-On LCA Modeling. Develop a simplified mass timber building model using OpenLCA.

Software

• OpenLCA (open-source platform for life-cycle modeling)

Prerequisites

• Basic knowledge of LCA concepts.
• Familiarity with mass timber construction.

Target Audience

• Professionals and researchers with prior exposure to LCA and mass timber.
• Sustainability practitioners seeking advanced modeling skills using OpenLCA.
