Edward Becker

Edward Becker, SAFA, is an Associate Professor at Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture and a registered, practicing architect in Finland. As an internationally-recognized expert in wood design and construction, he is the 2024-2025 Chair of the Softwood Lumber Board’s Timber Education Advisory Panel, a select group of university faculty who advise the US timber industry via the SLB on strategic investment in higher education. Through this role, Professor Becker has advised numerous timber executives from across North America on the state of timber in higher education, including from WoodWorks, the American Wood Council, the Gates Family Foundation, and executives of the fifteen largest timber companies in North America, including West Frazer, the world’s largest lumber producer.

Among other honors, Professor Becker was invited to co-lead the inaugural Timber Faculty Development Workshop at Clemson University in 2022, a timber education series that has since educated over 100 university faculty across the US, impacting thousands of university students. Professor Becker is regularly invited to jury professional awards, including the ACSA Timber Education Prize, and his mass timber research has been widely published and awarded, including in The Architect’s Newspaper’s “Best of the Best” design publication and Phaidon’s “Architizer: World’s Best Architecture 2020.”
