Mike has designed, negotiated, marketed, and managed insurance placements on construction projects comprising over $100 billion in construction cost. Working with owners, developers, contractors, engineering firms and lenders, he has played a key role on a wide variety of projects including hospitals, universities, office buildings, residential/mixed use, tunnels, passenger rail, stadiums and arenas, industrial, and power generation. He has led risk and insurance consulting teams on six major U.S. public-private partnership (P3) transactions achieving financial close since 2009, comprising over $13 billion in construction cost.

With a foundation of 30 years working in leadership roles at Marsh Inc. and The Travelers Insurance Company, Mike formed M.D. Hastings LLC to provide an independent source of advice that is not tied to the sale of insurance products or ancillary services. M.D. Hastings Risk Consulting has recently been engaged on projects in New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Washington, DC.

Mike is a frequent speaker on construction risk management and insurance issues, sought out by groups such as the Associated General Contractors of America, the American Bar Association, and RIMS. He is a co-author for the ABA publication Construction Insurance: A Guide for Attorneys and Other Professionals.
