Insuring Mass Timber Projects and Buildings

Roundtable Summary and Speakers
Mass timber construction — utilizing solid wood panels, beams, and posts as an alternative to concrete and steel — is growing in popularity due to a reduced carbon footprint and aesthetic appeal. While extensive testing has proven mass timber’s strength and fire resistance, little is known about the time and cost to repair damage to these buildings — structurally and aesthetically — caused by fire, earthquake, water, or other perils. Actuarial data can take years to amass, and in the meantime insurers are conservative with capacity and pricing.
This roundtable discussion will focus on best practices in risk management during design, construction, and operations, and how owners and contractors can best present their project/building to property insurers. We will draw from the experience of experts in loss control, underwriting, and claims with practical advice for achieving optimum results, and approaching insurers on their own terms.
