Florian Meier is a structural engineer and Director at the international engineering firm knippershelbig. Florian was trained at the Technical University of Munich, and has experience in a variety of materials, building typologies and construction technologies. Among other projects, Florian was responsible for the structural design of the granite stone vault of the Sean Collier Memorial in Cambridge (Höweler + Yoon Architecture), the 45 m spanning steel and glass dome of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles (Renzo Piano Building Workshop), as well as the mass timber structure of the Johns Hopkins University Student Center (Bjarke Ingels Group), which is a 2025 SEAoNY SEE Award Winner.
Florian frequently contributes to structural and architectural magazines and books, most recently in “Conceptual Design of Structures” (BIRKHÄUSER), published in 2024. Between 2018 and 2024 Florian taught Structural Design at the renowned Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union, New York, and he was a Lecturer at the Weitzman School of Design, University of Pennsylvania from 2021 to 2022. Professionally and in education, Florian is focusing on the collaboration between architects and engineers, innovative structural systems, building technologies and the advancement of sustainable materials, such as mass timber.
